Where to get backpack upgrades in Stardew Valley

An image showing my backpack upgrade guide.

When you first start Stardew Valley, you’re only able to carry 12 items in total. You’ll quickly find that there isn’t much room for anything else if you regularly take your tools with you.

Thankfully, you can purchase two backpack upgrades to expand your carry capacity. The Large Pack upgrades you to 24 and the Deluxe Pack upgrades you to 36 items.

The upgrades are incredibly helpful once you’ve expanded your farm or frequently dive into the mines, allowing you to carry more resources or crops alongside your tools.

The two backpack upgrades can only be purchased from Pierre’s General Store. You can find them to the right of Pierre. Just approach the red or blue backpack to purchase them.

They cost:

  • Large Pack (Red): 2,000g
  • Deluxe Pack (Blue): 10,000g

The Large Pack upgrade is available from the beginning of the game, but the Deluxe Pack is only unlocked once you’ve purchased the Large Pack.

Inventory management tips

In the lead-up to purchasing the backpack upgrades, you’re going to need to manage your inventory carefully to avoid consuming every slot quickly. Between crops, tools, fish, and foraging, it can be easy to hold too much.

So here are a few tips to help you effectively manage your inventory space in the early game:

  1. Craft a wooden chest on your farm and store all of the tools you don’t plan on using for the day. I like to store everything except for the watering can when I’m farming at the start of a new day, and then only take my rod with me if I’m exploring town, or my pickaxe, rod, and sword if I’m venturing into the mines.
  2. Place chests around Stardew Valley. You can actually place chests anywhere in the world, including beside the lift to the mines, outside NPC houses, outside shops, and more (As shown in the screenshots above). This can be handy for swapping out tools or emptying your pockets when full. Just avoid placing chests where NPCs walk, as they will destroy your chest.
  3. Use your fridge! If you can’t craft any more chests and everything you have is full, use your fridge! You can store lots of different crops in your fridge, which connects to the game’s cooking mechanic, giving you more freedom to store resources and tools in chests.

I hope this short guide will help you manage your inventory better and purchase those much-needed backpack upgrades from Pierre! Let me know if you have any other tips. Happy farming!
